He gets average marks, has average looks and average sporting ability. (Bar his natural talent for ultimate frisbee). Joe is the guy who always drops the baton and never gets the girl. With the end of Year 12 looming Joe is pushed to make decisions about his future. Although he tries his best not to take life seriously, he begins to realise that sooner or later, he is going to have to grow up. The King of Whatever is one of the most enjoyable young adult novels I have read in the last year. It is fun, contemporary, has a funny central character and deals with important issues for this readership. What are you going to do with your life? How can you decide when you are 18 years old? What is most important to you? Did you know your dad actually likes to watch Seinfeld more than the news? What is particularly impressive about this novel is the way that it depicts teenage boys. The novel captures the wit, values and voices of 18-year-old Australian boys perfectly. For this reason it would be particularly good for older boys who are reluctant readers. RM: 15.00
Summary : When the four Stanley children meet Amanda, their new stepsister, they're amazed to learn that she studies witchcraft. They're stunned to see her dressed in a strange costume, carrying a pet crow and surrounded by a pile of books about the supernatural. It's not long before Amanda promises to give witchcraft lessons to David, Jamie and the twins. But that's when strange things start happening in their old house. David suspects Amanda of causing mischief, until they learn that the house really was haunted long ago.

Menelaus gets his big brother Agamemnon to join forces with him and attack Troy. To win the war, Agamemnon knows he has to have the best (and in that time period it was Achilles (the greastest warrior that ever lived)). So he recruits Achilles to fight with the Greeks. When they attack Troy's beach (and win it) the soldiers find Briesis (cousin of Hector and Paris) hiding in the temple and bring her to Achilles to "amuse him". He starts off playfully provoking her but she and he eventually fall for each other, which creates trouble for the himself and the royalfamily in "The war that will be remembered for one thousand years." As a Night Watch agent he must patrol the streets and metro of the city, protecting ordinary people from the vampires and magicians of the Dark. Summary : Ben wanted a Mongolian Fighting Fish more than anything: and he’d been saving for months to buy one. But when he goes to Mr Dodds's Pet Emporium with his hard-earned savings, he buys a cat instead. He didn't have a choice, really. The cat insisted.
Iggy (as the tabby likes to be called) has an amazing story to tell. He comes from a place called Eidolon, a parallel world to our own, which some call the Secret Country. It is a world full of magic and magical things – dragons, selkies, sprites and centaurs; dinosaurs, mermaids and monsters.
And as the two soon discover, Iggy is not the only animal to fall victim to the pet-store owner's devious scheme: Mr Dodds is stealing the Secret Country's magical creatures and selling them to England's rich and curious. Away from their homeland, the imported dragons, wood sprites, unicorns, and sabre-toothed tigers are rapidly becoming sick. The welfare of every creature with any connection to the Secret Country is under immediate threat. What's more, it seems Ben's mother is their long-lost queen.
With his mother's life hanging in the balance, it's up to Ben to play his part in an ancient prophecy and prove he's worthy of the title Prince of Eidolon.

Summary : The white owl comes to rest on a fig tree that grows below Penelope's chamber. This is the only room in the palace where a light is still burning. This is where she is needed. Penelope, faithful and devoted wife of Odysseus, has been waiting for more than ten years for her husband to return to their home, Ithaka, a beautiful island set in the blue waters of the Ionion Sea. Klymene is a young handmaiden, and when the peace of Ithaka is shattered by the arrival of strangers ambitious for the hand of her mistress, Penelope, she too becomes caught up in passions inspired by the gods... RM 15.00
Summary : Manlius is a 5th C Roman patrician living in Provence who has studied with the wise, reclusive Sophia. He writes his understanding of her teaching in his essay, 'Dream of Scipio,' which trades on an essay by the great Roman orator, Cicero. Sensing that the Empire is gravely threatened, he makes a pact with barbarians, sells out his neighbors, slays his adopted son, and becomes a bishop of the Christian religion, which he has long despised. Late in this ruthless and doomed attempt to salvage what he values most in his world, Sophia makes it clear that he has misunderstood her teaching.
Olivier is an astonishingly gifted 14th century Provencal poet whose intolerant father tries to stifle his love of letters, among which is Manlius's 'Dream'; his father destroys the manuscript, but Olivier recopies it from memory. As plague advances on their region, Olivier finds a mentor in the high churchman, Ceccani, who is bent on keeping the papacy in Avignon. He plans to destroy Jews as symbolic expiation for plague, widely construed to be a form of divine punishment. Olivier befriends a Jewish scholar and falls in love with his beautiful heretic servant.
The 'Dream' and the imprisonment of his friends lead Olivier to question and then betray his mentor. Either because of his efforts to save them, or for his role in a murder, he is mutilated--his tongue and hands cut off to rob him of speech and writing. The brutal mutilation appears early in the book--it is not fully explained until the end.

Summary : Eighteen-year-old Laurel Blackburn travels to Ireland to visit her grandparents on the one year anniversary of the death of her twin sister, Honor. The previous year, while the two of them had been visiting Ireland, Honor fell to her death from Bray Head. Laurel blamed herself; if she had been with Honor, rather than with Ian Gray, the minister's attractive but rebellious son, Honor wouldn't have climbed Bray Head and she wouldn't have died.
Honor had believed in fairies, but Laurel is more pragmatic. But she so desperately wants Honor back, that when a cluricaun appears and tells her that she can save Honor, she has no choice but to believe. The cluricaun tells her that the Summer King is missing, and without the Summer King to light the ring of fire on Midsummer's Eve, Faerie is in trouble. And since Faerie and the human world are linked, the loss is affecting the human world as well. If Laurel can find the Summer King and bring him back to light the fire, Faerie will be restored and Honor will be saved. RM 15.00
